Junior Firefighter Program 

Application Criteria 

Applicant Eligibility - At the time of application, an applicant to the program must be fourteen (14) years of age or older and a full-time resident of the Hanover Area School District 

Academic Requirements and Regulations - All junior firefighters are to maintain eligibility in the program by maintaining a 77% or C Grade average in all school programs. At the time of application the applicant must provide a letter of recommendation from a teacher or other school official, this is required to minimize conflicts of interest between education and firefighting activities. This letter should contain the date, contact information, and a signature from the issuing school official. 

Background Check - All applicants must pass a background check completed through the Pennsylvania State Police and Hanover Township Police Department. 

Child Abuse Clearance - All applicants must pass a PA Child Abuse History Clearance Certification. All applicants to the Hanover Township Fire Department are required to complete this obligation regardless of age. 

Employment Certificates (Working Papers) - All junior firefighters must obtain an employment certificate (“working papers”) in order to participate as a member of a volunteer fire department. Such certificates may be obtained through the junior firefighter’s school district. A copy of the certificate must be kept on file at the fire station while the documents remain current and valid. 

Interview Process - The applicant will be asked to be present at an interview with Township Line Officers upon successful completion of application requirements. 

The Hanover Township Fire Department follows all State and Federal Laws pertaining to Junior Firefighters. Additional information pertaining to Junior Firefighters will be provided upon acceptance into the Departments Junior Firefighter Program.
