Patriot Day: We Will Never Forget

Today, September 11, the Hanover Township Fire Department joins our community and our nation in observing Patriot Day and remembering the lives forever changed by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years have passed since that September morning, but the sacrifice, courage, and unity witnessed that day remain deeply rooted in the fire service and in communities across our country.

We remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost in New York City, at the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. We honor the first responders who ran toward danger while thousands sought safety, and we remember those who have since lost their lives or continue to suffer from illnesses related to their service at Ground Zero and the other attack sites.

For the fire service, September 11 carries a particularly profound meaning. The 343 members of the FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice that day represent the very principles upon which our profession is built: courage, duty, service, and an unwavering commitment to others.

Their sacrifice continues to remind every firefighter of the responsibility that comes with answering the call.

Here in Pennsylvania, we also remember the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93, whose courageous actions prevented further loss of life. Their final resting place near Shanksville remains a lasting symbol of bravery and selflessness in the face of unimaginable circumstances.

Patriot Day is not only a day to remember how many we lost—it is also a day to remember how our nation responded. In the hours, days, and weeks following the attacks, Americans stood together. Firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, military members, healthcare workers, volunteers, and ordinary citizens demonstrated what it means to serve something greater than ourselves.

The Hanover Township Fire Department asks our community to take a moment today to remember those who went to work and never returned home, the first responders who answered their final alarm, the families who continue to carry their loss, and all those whose lives were forever changed by September 11, 2001.

May we continue to honor them not only through remembrance, but through service, compassion, unity, and dedication to our communities.
