| April 12, 2026 | |
| The Hanover Township Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on southbound Interstate 81 just past Exit 164. Upon arrival, crews encountered an SUV heavily involved in fire, with flames extending into the surrounding roadside grass. Firefighters quickly deployed multiple handlines to bring the situation under control, including two attack lines for the vehicle and an additional line to extinguish the grass fire. Mutual Aid was received from Ashley Fire and Wright Twp Fire to assist with fire suppression efforts. Due to the intensity of the fire, particularly in the area of the vehicle’s fuel tank crews utilized a specialized encapsulating agent (F-500) to assist with suppression and fuel mitigation. Approximately 3,900 gallons of water were used during the operation. Fire Police responded to the scene and temporarily shut down southbound Interstate 81 at Exit 164 to ensure the safety of emergency personnel and the traveling public while crews worked. The fire was successfully extinguished with no reported injuries. Crews remained on scene for a period of time to conduct overhaul operations and ensure all hazards were mitigated before reopening the roadway. The Hanover Township Fire Department reminds motorists to remain alert while traveling and to reduce speed when approaching emergency scenes. |
